A Gentle Reminder for Parents This Winter Break
Happy Holidays to you and your family! As winter break arrives, many parents are welcoming their college students back home — back to familiar routines, family dinners, and yes… their childhood bedrooms. While this season is often filled with joy and relief, it can also bring a quiet undercurrent of worry, especially if the first semester didn’t go exactly as planned.
If you’re feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension, you’re not alone.
For some students, the first semester of college is everything they hoped for. For others, it’s harder than expected. Academic struggles, roommate conflicts, homesickness, anxiety, or mental health challenges can surface — sometimes all at once. As parents, it’s natural to want to fix everything immediately. But one mom shared a reminder that bears repeating this time of year:
“Everything is figureoutable.”
Those words matter.
A rough semester does not define your student. A disappointing grade, a failed class, or a tough social situation is not the end of their story — it’s part of it. Often, these bumps in the road are actually stepping stones toward growth, resilience, and maturity. College isn’t just about academics; it’s about learning how to navigate life when things don’t go perfectly.
This break is an opportunity — not for interrogation, but for connection.
Listen more than you talk. Offer reassurance before advice. Let your student know that setbacks don’t equal failure and that you believe in their ability to move forward. Sometimes the most powerful thing a parent can say is, “We’ll figure this out together.”
If your student is struggling, remember:
- One semester does not determine their future.
- Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
- Growth often comes from discomfort.
- There are always next steps, options, and second chances.
As parents, our role isn’t to clear every obstacle from the path — it’s to walk beside our students while they learn how to navigate them on their own.
So this holiday season, take a deep breath. Give yourself grace, and give your student grace too. Progress doesn’t always look linear, and that’s okay.
Because truly — everything is figureoutable.
Wishing you and your family peace, rest, and hope this holiday season. 💛
